West Valley Humane Society Field Trip

My daughter and I are not what you’d call fans of summer. Some people bask in the sunshine. We cling to ice packs and whisper “we were not built for this.”
So, in an effort to embrace the season (or at least survive it with some grace), we’ve been taking “field trips” — and today’s adventure brought us to the West Valley Humane Society.
Yes, it was Field Trip Day. And yes, as your Caldwell City Councilor, I’ll soon be asked to consider increasing funding for the shelter. So I thought it was important to go see things firsthand — how it operates, what’s needed, and what’s already working.
We got a great tour, learned a ton, and yes… we met the dogs. One puppy in particular received a treat from my daughter and reacted with such wide-eyed joy I honestly wasn’t sure if he was going to eat the treat or launch into orbit. His eyes said it all. He was ecstatic. My daughter was in love. I was definitely being watched to make sure I didn’t bring him home.
I also had the chance to meet one of the shelter’s board members and have a great conversation. Without getting too political, I’ll just say I’m really glad I went. I’m hopeful that ongoing discussions between City Hall and the right people will lead to real, meaningful support for our animals in Caldwell.
I’ll be asking the Mayor soon for an update on where things stand, and when I know more, I’ll share it here. In the meantime, if you’ve ever thought about volunteering, I’d encourage you to check out the West Valley Humane Society’s website. My daughter is seriously thinking about signing up during her downtime — and who knows, you might even see me out there too.
